The Veteran Burial Timeliness and Death Certificate Accountability Act requires a physician or nurse practitioner employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs to certify the death of a veteran within 48 hours of learning of the death. If the VA physician or nurse practitioner cannot comply, a coroner or medical examiner in the jurisdiction where the death occurred may certify the death. The Act mandates annual reporting on compliance with these timelines.
