New York S09501 amends the general business law to authorize rental vehicle companies to regain custody of rental vehicles not returned at the end of the rental agreement. This includes repossession when renters retain custody beyond the rental period, obtain vehicles through false pretenses, or fail to pay. The rental company must notify the renter and allow them to return the vehicle or extend the rental period. If the vehicle is not returned within 24 hours, the company can take action to regain custody. The company must document all attempts to notify the renter for 60 days.
