Prohibits landlords from demanding brokers' fees from tenants.
New York S00571 amends the real property law to prohibit landlords, lessors, sub-lessors, and grantors from demanding brokers' fees from tenants. This prohibition applies to all payments, fees, or charges for processing, reviewing, or accepting an application, or any other fees before or at the beginning of the tenancy. Exceptions are made for background checks and credit checks, and entrance fees charged by continuing care retirement communities. The act takes effect immediately.
