ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive disease that attacks nerve cells controlling voluntary movement. The disease affects both upper and lower motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness, wasting, and twitching. ALS is 100% fatal and has few treatments. There are two types: sporadic, which affects 90% of cases and can occur in anyone, and familial, which accounts for 10% of cases and is inherited.
