New York A06197 amends the public officers law to authorize the governor to appoint a lieutenant-governor. This appointee will serve until the vacancy is filled by an election, or for the remainder of the term if it expires within the calendar year of the appointment. If the lieutenant-governor's office becomes vacant, the governor must nominate a replacement, who will take office upon confirmation by separate majority votes in each house of the state legislature. This act takes effect immediately.
