New York State Police can receive service credit for prior work as deputy sheriff, county corrections officer, or state corrections officer.

This bill amends the Retirement and Social Security Law to allow New York State Police (Troopers) to receive service credit for time spent as a deputy sheriff, county corrections officer, or state corrections officer. To qualify, Troopers must have at least seventeen years of service credit in the New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System. They must pay three percent of their salary per year of service awarded, up to a maximum of two years. This credit cannot be combined with credit received under another section of the law.
