Permits the use of portable electronic devices for making phone calls by incarcerated individuals.
The bill amends the correction law to allow incarcerated individuals to make phone calls using portable electronic devices, such as tablets. These wireless calls will be part of the telephone service system, but will not replace traditional phone calls. The department will make a reasonable effort to provide these wireless calls free of charge, and they will not be subject to higher costs than calls made from telephones. The department retains the same ability to impose limitations on wireless calls as it does for traditional calls.
