The "making equitable and alternative lunches (MEAL) act" mandates that public schools provide plant-based, halal, and kosher food options as alternatives to every meal or snack offered in school food services. Students or their parents can select these alternative meal options at the start of the school year and twice more during the school year, as determined by the school district. These alternative food options must be offered at no additional cost to the student beyond what is charged for a comparable non-alternative food option.
