The Birth Certificate Modernization Act in Maryland updates the state's laws to allow individuals to designate their sex as female, male, or unspecified or another on their birth certificates and identification cards. The act also mandates that if an individual selects an unspecified or another designation, their identification documents will display an "X" in the sex designation field. This change applies to both birth certificates and licenses, identification cards, and moped operator’s permits issued by the Motor Vehicle Administration.
