Maryland SB506 expands pharmacists' scope of practice to include treating minor conditions and HIV prevention and treatment.
Maryland SB506 allows pharmacists to order, test for, screen for, and treat minor conditions such as cold sores, influenza, and urinary tract infections. It also authorizes pharmacists to perform and interpret laboratory tests for HIV, prescribe and dispense pre-exposure and postexposure prophylaxis medications, and provide referrals for additional care. The bill repeals the Nonoccupational Postexposure Prophylaxis (nPEP) Standing Order Program and allows the Maryland Department of Health to establish statewide written protocols for HIV prevention and treatment.
