Maryland SB490 amends the Maryland Medical Assistance Program to prohibit the use of step therapy or fail-first protocols for prescription drugs treating serious mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and medication-induced movement disorders. Beginning July 1, 2026, the program must require prior authorization instead of step therapy or fail-first protocols for these conditions. The law will remain in effect until June 30, 2029, after which it will be abrogated.
