Federal Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Act of 2026 mandates NIST to develop standards for AI systems used by federal agencies.

The Federal Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Act of 2026 requires the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop standards and guidelines for artificial intelligence systems used by federal agencies, excluding national security systems. The Director of NIST must also conduct a gap analysis of existing voluntary technical standards for AI system acquisitions, develop performance indicators, and provide guidelines for agency AI system profiles. The Director is to periodically assess the effectiveness of these standards and guidelines and revise them as necessary.
