Federal law enforcement officers may only use deadly force to prevent imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury.
The Uniform Standards for Federal Law Enforcement Act of 2026 restricts when Federal law enforcement officers can use deadly force. It allows such force only when necessary to prevent imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury to the officer or another person. The bill prohibits using deadly force to prevent a fleeing suspect's escape, to disable a moving vehicle, or against someone whose actions only threaten themselves or property. It also mandates a verbal warning before using deadly force, unless it would increase the danger. Warning shots are prohibited except in federal prisons.
