Expands Medicare criteria for rural emergency hospitals to include closed critical access hospitals and subsection (d) hospitals.
The Second Chances for Rural Hospitals Act amends the Social Security Act to modify the criteria for designation of rural emergency hospitals under Medicare. It allows closed critical access hospitals and subsection (d) hospitals in rural areas to qualify as rural emergency hospitals. The changes apply to facilities that were operational between January 1, 2014, and December 26, 2020, and ceased operations by the enactment date of this Act. The amendments take effect on January 1, 2027.
