Congress expresses the sense that a naval aircraft carrier should be named for Doris "Dorie" Miller.
The bill expresses the sense of Congress that the Secretary of the Navy should name a future Ford class aircraft carrier the "Doris Miller" in honor of Mess Attendant Third Class Doris "Dorie" Miller. Miller, born to sharecroppers in Texas, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1939. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, he moved the wounded captain to safety, took control of an anti-aircraft gun, and brought down Japanese aircraft. He was among the last to leave the sinking U.S.S. West Virginia. In 1942, he received the Navy Cross and was featured in Navy recruitment posters.
