Congress expresses the sense that a naval aircraft carrier should be named for Doris Miller, a decorated World War II sailor.
Congress expresses the sense that the Secretary of the Navy should name a future aircraft carrier the "Doris Miller" in honor of Mess Attendant Third Class Doris "Dorie" Miller. Miller, who enlisted in 1939, was the first Black sailor to receive the Navy Cross. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, he took control of an anti-aircraft gun despite lacking proper training and brought down Japanese aircraft. He was killed in action in 1943. This aligns with the Navy's 2020 announcement to name a future Ford class aircraft carrier after Miller.
