Municipalities can join the Municipal Police Officers and Firefighters Retirement System for officers and firefighters hired after July 1, 2015.

West Virginia SB978 allows municipalities employing police officers and firefighters who are members of the Emergency Medical Services Retirement System to join the Municipal Police Officers and Firefighters Retirement System. Police officers and firefighters hired after July 1, 2015, can choose to transfer to the new system. The municipality must make its election to join by July 1, 2027. The Consolidated Public Retirement Board will compute and transfer assets and service credit for those who choose to join.
