HB2212 aims to reduce microplastic pollution from washing machines in Washington.
HB2212 mandates that new residential washing machines sold in Washington after July 1, 2030, must be capable of filtering microfibers. The Department of Ecology may adopt rules requiring these filters if at least one other state has similar requirements or if there is a significant market for such machines in Washington. New commercial and industrial washing machines must contain microfiber filtration systems and bear a label indicating the presence of such a filter starting July 1, 2028.
