Virginia SB62 modifies sentences for individuals convicted of marijuana-related felonies committed before July 1, 2021. The bill requires the Department of Corrections, local sheriffs, regional jail directors, and the Department of Juvenile Justice to identify eligible individuals. These individuals must be notified of their eligibility for sentence modification and the opportunity to file a petition for assistance of counsel. The circuit court must schedule a hearing and make a decision within specified timeframes. The modified sentence cannot exceed the original term imposed.
