An act relating to rounding cash transactions

Introduced·1/29/26
Uced Text

Vermont H0837 authorizes rounding cash transactions to the nearest five cents when one-cent coins are unavailable or impractical.

Vermont H0837, the "Nickel Rounding for Cash Transactions Act," allows businesses to round cash transactions to the nearest five cents. This rounding applies to sales where payment is made in cash, adjusting the final amount due based on the last digit. If the final digit is $0.01, $0.02, $0.06, or $0.07, the amount is rounded down; if it is $0.03, $0.04, $0.08, or $0.09, it is rounded up. This rounding does not apply to electronic payments, wage payments, rebates, or transactions governed by federal law prohibiting rounding.
