Vetoed·6/22/25

Allows indigent parents to select their own attorney ad litem in certain suits affecting the parent-child relationship.

The bill amends the Family Code to allow an indigent parent in certain suits affecting the parent-child relationship to select their own attorney who is licensed to practice law in Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. If the court finds the selected attorney qualified, it must appoint them as the attorney ad litem for the parent and terminate any previous appointment. The attorney is subject to all applicable provisions and entitled to compensation. This change applies only to suits filed after the bill's effective date of September 1, 2025.
