Texas SB1722 requires school districts and open-enrollment charter schools to adopt paid parental leave policies for classroom teachers. Eligible teachers, who have been employed for at least 12 months and worked at least 1,250 hours in the preceding 12 months, can take leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act for the birth of a child, the birth of a child by the employee's spouse, or the adoption of a child. Teachers are entitled to 40 days of paid leave for these events. For teachers who do not meet the eligibility criteria, a leave of absence not exceeding 12 weeks is available.
