The House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature recognizes January 29, 2025, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Day at the State Capitol. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., founded on January 15, 1908, by Howard University undergraduate Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and 19 other students, is the nation's first Greek sorority for African American women. The organization, with over 360,000 members in more than 1,000 chapters worldwide, aims to cultivate high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, improve the social stature of women, and serve all mankind.
