Born in Wheeler, he grew up with four siblings and later married Patsy Ruth Noah in 1949. He earned a degree in entomology from Texas A&M University and served in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps. He worked in sales for Stauffer Agricultural Chemicals and later owned Hardcastle Ag Air, Inc., an aerial spraying contractor. After selling the company, he and his son Rick owned Rolling H Cattle Company.
