Born in Ganado, she was the daughter of Barbara Overton and Lenard Watson and grew up with seven siblings. She was a devoted member of True Light Baptist Church and later married James Edward Middleton Jr., with whom she had two children. After her first marriage ended, she married James Junior Butler in 2002. She worked as a sales representative at Dillard's and later as an accounting clerk for Sears.
