The Texas House of Representatives recognizes April 22, 2025, as McMullen County Day at the State Capitol. McMullen County, located in central South Texas, covers over 1,000 square miles of flat and rolling brushland. Artifacts suggest human settlement in the area dates back as far as 11,000 years. Spanish expeditions traversed the region in the 17th and 18th centuries, but significant settlement did not occur until just before the Civil War. The county was established in 1858, and settlers named the town first Rio Frio, then Dog Town, and finally Tilden, after Samuel J. Tilden.
