Refugio County, located in the Coastal Prairies region along the lower Gulf Coast, was one of the 13 original counties of the Republic of Texas. The county is named for Nuestra Señora del Refugio Mission, founded in 1793. Agriculture, livestock, sorghum, cotton, corn, wheat, hay, petroleum, natural gas, and industrial sand are key economic drivers. The county hosts annual events like the Refugio County Fair and is home to approximately 6,700 people.
