The Texas House of Representatives commends retired U.S. Navy Commander Everett Alvarez Jr. for his dedicated service in the Vietnam War. Alvarez, who earned an electrical engineering degree from Santa Clara University, joined the U.S. Navy in 1960 and became a fighter pilot on the USS Constellation aircraft carrier. He was shot down over North Vietnam in 1964, becoming a prisoner of war for eight years and seven months. During his captivity, he demonstrated extraordinary courage and resilience. After his release, he received numerous military awards, including the Congressional Gold Medal.
