Texas HB998 allows disabled veterans to request a preliminary determination on property tax exemptions before purchasing a residence homestead.
HB998 amends the Tax Code to allow a disabled veteran to request a preliminary determination from the chief appraiser of the applicable appraisal district regarding whether a property would qualify for a disabled veteran exemption. The request must include the same information as an exemption application. The chief appraiser must issue a written preliminary determination within 30 days. Mortgage companies and title insurance companies must consider the preliminary determination when deciding whether to extend credit and the amount due at closing.
