Texas HB931 establishes the legal framework for covenant marriages, including requirements for premarital counseling, dissolution, and maintenance.
Texas HB931 amends the Family Code to create a legal framework for covenant marriages. Couples can designate their marriage as a covenant marriage by filing an affidavit with the county clerk. To enter into or designate a covenant marriage, couples must complete five hours of premarital counseling. The court can grant a divorce for a covenant marriage only if the parties agree and have completed counseling. The bill also allows courts to order maintenance in proceedings for the dissolution or legal separation of a covenant marriage. The act takes effect September 1, 2025.
