Texas HB5131 amends the Code of Criminal Procedure to require counties with a population of more than one million to establish and maintain an office of medical examiner. Counties with a population of less than one million may establish such an office. The bill also allows two or more counties to create a medical examiners district and jointly operate and maintain the office of medical examiner of the district. The district must include the entire area of all counties involved and the counties must form a continuous area. The changes take effect September 1, 2025.
