The process begins with a petition signed by at least 20% of registered voters in the proposed new district. If the petition is valid, an election is held. The new district is created if the election results show a majority in favor in both the territory to be detached and the remaining territory. The new district assumes property and liabilities from the original district. The act takes effect September 1, 2025.
