Texas HB2874 mandates social media platforms to attach provenance data to content created or posted on their sites.
HB2874 amends the Business & Commerce Code to require social media platforms with over 1.5 million active users in Texas to attach provenance data to photos, videos, and audio files. Provenance data includes metadata identifying the file's origin, generation method, and transmission history. If a platform cannot discern the provenance data, it must attach a notice instead. Users must be able to easily access this data. The law takes effect September 1, 2025.
