Tennessee SB1977 amends the state's probation laws to prevent the revocation of probation and suspension of sentence for a first-time drug offense violation. If a trial judge finds by a preponderance of the evidence that a defendant has violated probation conditions for a felony by engaging in a drug offense, the judge must order the defendant to attend a substance abuse treatment program instead of revoking probation. This act takes effect July 1, 2026.
