Tennessee SB1748 amends commercial driver license regulations to require English language proficiency for drivers.

Tennessee SB1748 amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 55 and Title 65, Chapter 15, relative to commercial driver licenses. The bill mandates that drivers must be able to read and speak English sufficiently to converse with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to inquiries, and make required entries. If a driver fails to meet these requirements, an out-of-service order is issued, and the vehicle cannot be operated until a substitute driver who meets the English language requirements is present. Employers are liable for fines resulting from such violations.
