SB1481

AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 9; Title 54; Title 55 and Title 67, relative to vehicles wholly or partly powered by electricity.

Introduced·12/11/25

Imposes a tax on electric vehicle power sold or distributed in Tennessee and regulates electric vehicle charging stations.

The bill amends Tennessee law to impose an excise tax on electric vehicle power sold or distributed in the state, effective January 1, 2027. The tax rate is three cents per kilowatt-hour. Electric vehicle charging station owners or lessees must obtain a special electricity sale and distribution license. The bill also mandates that charging stations accurately measure and display the amount of electric vehicle power delivered. The commissioner may assess civil penalties for violations and remit license fee proceeds to counties or municipalities for road and public transportation funding.
