Draft Text

SB1407 amends Tennessee's use of force laws, modifying definitions and circumstances for justified force.

SB1407 amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 39, to redefine "deadly force" and expand the circumstances under which a person can use force. It modifies the definition of "deadly force" to include force that is intended or known to cause a substantial risk of death, protracted unconsciousness, or extreme physical pain. The bill also expands the situations where a person can use deadly force, including when they reasonably believe that other means of protection are unavailable or would expose them to serious harm.
