Tennessee SB0402 prohibits healthcare providers from reporting medical debt to consumer reporting agencies, effective July 1, 2025.

Tennessee SB0402 amends the Tennessee Code to prevent healthcare providers from reporting patients' medical debt to consumer reporting agencies, effective July 1, 2025. This act also prohibits consumer reporting agencies from including medical debt records on consumer reports starting from the same date. Consumers can dispute such information if reported in violation of this act, under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act. Violations of this act are considered unfair or deceptive practices under the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act of 1977.
