Prater, a native of Claiborne County, Tennessee, made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq on March 15, 2007. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for saving the life of Retired Sergeant Tim Ngo by shielding him from a grenade in Baghdad. Prater's son, Bryson, continues to fish from the Blue Springs Boat Ramp, a place Prater cherished.
