HB2040 amends Tennessee law to criminalize threats against public officials and their immediate family members.

HB2040 introduces a new offense in Tennessee law, making it a Class E felony to intentionally communicate a threat of harm to a public official or their immediate family. The bill defines "immediate family" to include spouses, parents, siblings, children, and their step and adoptive equivalents. A violation occurs if the person making the threat knows the target is a public official or family member and intends the communication to be a threat. The act takes effect July 1, 2026.
