HB1656 amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 39 and Title 40, to elevate the severity of penalties for assault against law enforcement officers, first responders, and nurses. Assault against a law enforcement officer or first responder is now classified as a Class E felony, with a mandatory fine of ten thousand dollars and a mandatory minimum sentence of sixty days incarceration. Assault against a nurse is also classified as a Class E felony, with a mandatory fine of ten thousand dollars and a mandatory minimum sentence of sixty days incarceration.
