HB1551

AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 41-51-301 and Title 55, Chapter 50, Part 3, relative to licenses.

Complete·4/27/26

Amends Tennessee law to extend driver licenses for inmates and provide identification licenses.

This bill amends Tennessee law to allow inmates with expired driver licenses to receive an extension. If an inmate's license expired solely due to incarceration, it is considered in good standing. The Department of Correction must coordinate with the Department of Safety to provide a driver license or a photo identification license to eligible inmates. The bill also mandates a six-month extension for inmates' driver licenses upon release from custody.
