HB1497

AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 2; Title 5; Title 6 and Title 7, relative to elections.

Chamber Passed·4/21/26

Amends Tennessee election laws to align municipal elections with state primary or general elections.

This bill amends Tennessee election laws to require municipal elections to align with state primary or general elections. It mandates that the first election of a legislative body in a newly chartered municipality must coincide with an upcoming regular primary or general election. Subsequent elections must align with the regular August or November general election. The bill also sets new qualifying deadlines for candidates and modifies the terms of legislative body members when election dates are changed. The changes do not affect the terms of incumbent officials.
