HB1199

AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49, Chapter 2, relative to boards of education.

Complete·5/13/25

Tennessee HB1199 requires local education agencies to select a junior or senior student as a nonvoting representative on their board of education.

Tennessee HB1199 amends the state's education code to mandate that each local education agency (LEA) with at least one high school must select a junior or senior student to serve as a nonvoting student representative on the board. This representative will act as the voice of the student body. The selection process and additional eligibility requirements are to be established by the board. The student must attend all board meetings but cannot attend confidential, nonpublic executive sessions. If a student misses more than two meetings, they will be removed and replaced.
