Draft Text

Tennessee HB1159 amends voter registration laws to require voters to declare their political party affiliation or unaffiliated status at registration.

Tennessee HB1159 modifies voter registration laws by requiring voters to declare their political party affiliation or unaffiliated status at the time of registration. The bill adds a new subsection to Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 2-2-118, allowing voters to choose a political party or declare themselves as unaffiliated. This declaration becomes part of the voter's permanent registration record. If a voter fails to make a designation, the county election commission will record them as unaffiliated. The changes take effect July 1, 2025.
