AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 33 and Title 39, Chapter 17, Part 13, relative to firearms.

Introduced·2/4/25

Tennessee HB0947 amends state law to prohibit firearm sales to individuals who have been patients in mental institutions within the past five years.

Tennessee HB0947 amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 39, to include a new provision making it an offense to sell, offer to sell, deliver, or transfer a firearm to someone known to have been a patient in a mental institution within the last five years. The bill defines "mental institution" as any facility primarily caring for persons with mental illness and "patient in a mental institution" as someone admitted for mental health treatment, excluding those admitted solely for alcohol abuse without other substance or mental health issues. This change takes effect July 1, 2025.
