Tennessee HB0414 allows places of worship to be used for educational purposes without reclassification, provided they meet safety upgrades.
Tennessee HB0414 amends Tennessee Code to allow existing places of worship to be used for educational purposes without changing their occupancy type. This is possible if the building meets safety upgrades, including installing smoke detectors, audible alarms, strobe alarms, clearly marked emergency exits, and fire extinguishers. Additionally, the educational use must not exceed the existing occupancy load. Compliance with these requirements exempts the place of worship from automatic fire sprinkler system requirements. The act takes effect July 1, 2025.
