Introduced·1/22/25

Tennessee Covenant Marriage Act establishes covenant marriage as a lifelong commitment with specific grounds for legal separation and divorce.

The Tennessee Covenant Marriage Act introduces a new type of marriage called a covenant marriage, which is a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman. Couples must receive counseling and execute a declaration of intent to enter into a covenant marriage. Legal separation is only allowed under specific circumstances, such as adultery, felony conviction, abandonment, or abuse. A spouse cannot obtain a divorce unless there is a complete and total breach of the marital covenant.
