Introduced Text

Establishes a one-time lump sum benefit for non-vested police officers who die in the line of duty.

This bill amends the South Carolina Code to provide a one-time lump sum benefit payment to the designated beneficiary of a non-vested member of the Police Officer's Retirement System who dies in the line of duty. The payment is equal to the greater of the member's accumulated contributions or seventy-five thousand dollars, provided the death is a natural and proximate result of an injury by external accident or violence incurred while undergoing a hazard peculiar to the member's employment, and not due to the member's wilful negligence, suicide, or intentionally self-inflicted bodily injury.
