S.0872

Immigration Status on Driver's License

Chamber Passed·4/29/26

Requires proof of citizenship or legal status for driver's licenses and prohibits NC-marked licenses from being used to vote.

This bill amends South Carolina law to require applicants for driver's licenses or identification cards to provide proof of citizenship or legal status. If an applicant cannot present proof of citizenship, they must present proof of legal status in the United States. If the applicant is legally in the U.S. but not a citizen, the license or card must contain an "NC" designation indicating non-U.S. citizenship. Additionally, the bill prohibits South Carolina driver's licenses or identification cards with an "NC" designation from being used to vote.
